The definition of community is the feeling of fellowship with others. ASOH is a fellowship of compassionate individuals who understand that we go further together.
Since day one, A Sense of Home has been a community driven solution in thanks to all of the unique ways in which individuals and businesses have shared their time, talents, resources and creativity. Our approach has always been outside of the box. And together, we are trailblazing a new path where innovative collaborations reveal how everyone can gain in the exchange – while also revealing everyone’s humanity.
Much like a ripple effect, ASOH has come into existence through an organic word-of-mouth movement. The amazing ASOH Ambassador, Lucila, learned about ASOH through Irena, our angel since day one. Lucila passionately volunteers with ASOH, always bringing new friends into the fold. One friend was Grace, who was part of the team creating a beautiful and stylish home for the amazing mom, Elizabeth, and daughter, Naomi. Grace in turn shared her experience with Kourtney Kardashian. Kourtney wanted her kids to do meaningful volunteerism during the holiday season, and together as a family they created a beautiful home for a young woman just days before Christmas. Kourtney shared her enthusiasm for ASOH with Stacey Bendet Eisner, Chief Executive Officer and Creative Director of Alice + Olivia – and this holiday season the two got together to create a casual line with 10% of proceeds going to ASOH. With more than 2 million views on Kourtney’s Instagram post this word-of-mouth story has been amplified even further.
ASOH has leveraged the shared economy and excess capacity model (made popular by Airbnb and Uber) to become an innovative disruptor nonprofit – forming a first of its kind homeless prevention model by gathering the least recycled items (furniture and home goods) and contributing to a greener environment. We strive to ensure everyone wins in the process, and that goes for our partners who donate goods and/or a percentage of sales to ASOH. In the very least, by sharing our story through our partners’ platforms we are amplifying kindness and opening minds to a greater understanding of those who need support. And hopefully we inspire a broader, deeper commitment to volunteerism and community building.
As you are able to hear from Regina, it is very challenging completing her master’s degree in Public Health at UCLA while working full time and having to live off of the floor. With the exponential need during the pandemic causing ASOH to almost run out of furniture and home goods, we’re relying on our partners more than ever. After hearing Regina’s story and of our great need, Lamps Plus donated necessary furniture items to ASOH, making it possible for ASOH to create a home for Regina this Friday, with Kaia Gerber volunteering. Not only does Kaia volunteer, she contributes greatly to ASOH through her pant line with Bleusalt, where 20% of sales are donated to ASOH. To make this collaboration even more beautiful, Bleusalt included ASOH recipient Chy in their campaign.
As the pandemic changed our world, Ruggable became unable to donate as many area rugs as they normally would. In lieu of rugs, the CEO founder Jeneva Bell donated $10k to ASOH at the onset of the pandemic. And then, upon realizing they would be further delayed in donating area rugs, Ruggable donated another $20k this week. We deeply value their meaningful partnership and their genuine commitment to creating sustainable change.
Another beautiful example of the embodiment of community came with a fabulous collaboration between Melissa McCarthy and Clare V. Together they created a one-time fashion line where 10% of the purchase price was donated to ASOH. Additionally, Melissa committed to matching Clare V.’s donation to A Sense of Home.
A Sense of Home is made possible because everyone who participates does so in their own unique, loving way. ASOH is made possible because of those who understand that we are in this together and we go further together.
Thank you to the community!! Your generous actions give us much needed energy and strength to keep moving forward. When you share your humanity, spirit and grace with us, it translates into each home creation. It is your love that envelops those we serve and the homes we create.
