A New Chapter in New York

Building upon over a decade of success in Los Angeles, A Sense of Home comes to New York City to serve the nation’s second-largest foster youth population.

Utilizing its innovative, scalable solution to prevent homelessness, ASOH’s model is centered around the science of creating a sense of home and a sense of belonging. Combining access to affordable housing and critical resources, creating homes, and providing an ongoing community of care, ASOH’s Three Step Pathway to Stability has demonstrated lasting outcomes, transforming the lives of 3,100+ foster youth and their families in Los Angeles to date. Further solidifying the impact of the organization’s groundbreaking technology and community-based model, ASOH swiftly launched a Disaster Recovery Program in 2025 to support families who lost their homes in the LA wildfires. By the end of 2026, ASOH will have provided furniture and home goods to 1,000 families, representing one sixth of the entire population impacted by the fires.

Beyond a successful model for an immediate crisis, ASOH has created a movement that allows space for our humanity to shine. Poised for this national expansion, ASOH will bring its replicable solution and capabilities to prevent homelessness, not only for foster youth but for other populations who have experienced trauma and instability. In New York, ASOH will begin creating a sense of home for youth aging out of foster care in May 2026

The Success of A Sense of Home

Infographic showing: 11 years, 2,000 homes created, 5,000 individuals served, 28,000 volunteers, $8.5 million in donated furniture, and an 85% 3-year housing retention rate for aged out foster youth.

Watch The Success

A Sense of Home’s Unique Three Step Pathway To Stability In New York

Step 1: Reducing Barriers & Support Securing Affordable Housing

  • ASOH is currently serving young people referred by our founding NY partners, The Children’s Village and Athos.
  • Once youth are referred to ASOH, their housing and resource needs are immediately assessed upon intake.
  • In the future, ASOH aims to replicate its Los Angeles model of providing housing navigation services, including securing affordable housing units for applicants.

Step 2: Creating a Launchpad for Success: The Home Creation

  • Once the youth receive keys to their apartment, ASOH provides a “Home Creation,” turning their empty space into a fully functioning, emotionally stabilizing, and inspired home.
  • Designed based on the youth’s unique interests and needs, a team of 15-20 volunteers and staff move in and set up the home with up to 300 donated items, all in 90 minutes.
  • During the Home Creation, youth receive resource navigation tailored to their short and long-term goals and spend time creating a vision board as they embark upon a new chapter.
  • Volunteers at the Home Creation give the youth a sense of hope and belonging, including “Pay-It-Forward Ambassadors” whose volunteerism provides peer mentorship and builds lifelong community.

Step 3: Ensuring Stability with Supportive Services and Caring Community

  • After the Home Creation, ASOH partners with the referring agency to provide ongoing supportive services to empower youth to continue an upward trajectory to better career, well-being, and educational gains.
  • Youth who become “Pay-It-Forward Ambassadors” are offered unique professional development opportunities, including advocating for policy change and compensated speaking engagements.
  • ASOH has no “age-out” limit. There is no age limit for initial application, and there is no aging-out of ongoing supportive services for former foster youth or their children.
  • In the future, ASOH aims to replicate its Los Angeles model of recipients receiving 1-1 resource navigation, including access to free mental health counseling and referrals for health and wellness care, job placement and training, food, parenting support, education, legal services, and more.
